EV Charging Installations Information

What type of EV charger do I need for my home?

The most common home EV chargers are Type 2 sockets with a power output of 7kW, which can charge most electric vehicles overnight. If you have off-street parking, a dedicated wall-mounted charger is recommended over using a standard 3-pin plug, as it is faster and safer. It’s best to consult with an installer who can advise on the most suitable charger for your vehicle and electrical supply.

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home?

Typical installation costs range from £800 to £1,200, depending on the charger type and complexity of the installation. Factors such as distance from your fuse board, any need for additional electrical upgrades, or groundwork can affect the final cost. Some government grants or schemes may be available to help reduce the upfront expense.

Can I get a grant or financial help for installing an EV charger?

Yes. In the UK, the EV Chargepoint Grant (which replaced the OLEV grant) provides up to £350 off the cost of installing a home charger for eligible applicants, including flat owners and renters with dedicated parking. There are also schemes for landlords and workplace installations. Your installer can help you apply.

How long does it take to install an EV charging point?

A standard home installation typically takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on the complexity of the wiring and distance from your consumer unit (fuse board). More complicated installations may take longer, especially if groundwork or additional safety upgrades are needed.

Will installing an EV charger increase my electricity bill?

Charging at home will naturally increase your electricity usage, but it is still far cheaper than fuelling a petrol or diesel car. Many drivers switch to an EV-friendly tariff with cheaper overnight rates to minimise costs. On average, charging an EV at home costs 5–8p per mile, depending on your tariff and vehicle efficiency.
